Choosing your bridal gown

Bridal gowns

Every bride wants to look beautiful on her big day so it is essential that you choose the right dress. Depending on your circumstances and budget you have the choice of hiring, buying or having your dress made for you.

Choosing the perfect dress

When choosing your wedding gown take into consideration the style and theme of your wedding, there are many styles to choose from with different bodices and skirts so don't leave it to the last minute before beginning to look.

There are many bridal magazines and web sites with ideas of dresses and this is an excellent way to start, but always go with what you would feel comfortable in and not what magazines or web sites say are in fashion. Remember that you are choosing your dress now but won't be wearing it for perhaps another 6 months and if off the shoulder gowns are in now then they might not be when your big day arrives.

Once you have an idea in mind then visit specialist shops and try on the gowns, what might look good in a book might not look the same on you. Always walk around in the gown and sit down to make sure you feel comfortable in it, take someone with you who you can trust to give you an honest opinion about how you look and take photos of the dresses you like to look back on.

Your dress will be very expensive so don't go rushing into something that you might later regret, make sure that you do like the dress above all others and feel comfortable while looking stunning. Another point to remember is that you will be buying the dress months beforehand and during this time you could gain or lose weight, a couple of pounds is ok but be careful of going to the extreme.

A respectable specialist shop will give you several fittings in between ordering the dress and the big day with the final fitting being around two weeks before your wedding day. Another big advantage to choosing a dress from a shop specialising in bridal wear is that you will be able to get the entire outfit including shoes, headdress and lingerie and bridesmaids dresses.

Once you have chosen your dress then make sure you try it on with shoes, veil, tiara, headdress and lingerie that you will be wearing on the day, this is essential for fittings nearer the date, most bridal shops will also provide you with mock bouquets to hold to give you an idea of how the whole ensemble will look.

Colours and fabrics for the gown

Traditionally the bride always wore white but these days white isn't compulsory and some people especially if they have very pale skin should avoid white and go for ivory or cream instead. The fabric of the dress is more a matter of personal taste with lace, Muslim and fine cotton being more suited to summer weddings while heavy satin, brocade and velvet are suited to winter weddings.
