Wedding planning tips

Not everyone dreams of a huge white wedding with a church ceremony, some people want a small wedding with just a few of their closest family and friends while others like the idea of the traditional white wedding but don't want the full blown church service that goes with it, for these people a register office wedding is often the perfect place to be married.

These days a register office wedding is just as nice as getting married in the church, the register office will be decorated with flowers which are provided by the register office or sometimes the couple themselves and can include wedding music and readings from poetry.

However readings from the bible and hymns are not allowed as the ceremony must not have any religious overtones as such. Another advantage of holding your wedding in a register office is the fact that more and more people want to video record their wedding and most register offices will allow the complete ceremony to be recorded while churches don't.

Marriage vows can also be written by the couples themselves with a few rules that have to be adhered to concerning the declaration by both the bride and groom that "they not know of any lawful impediment why they should not be married".

Couples also have to include the vow of "I take thee or you to be my lawfully wedded husband or wife", other than that the couple have an almost free rein of the wedding vows. Register offices vary also on the wording of the ceremony and often will have several from which the couple can choose for their ceremony.

Register office weddings are becoming so popular that now more and more register offices are making sure that they provide couples with places to take photographs, many having a special area planted with greenery and flowers or at the very least artificial ones as a backdrop.

Civil ceremonies

A civil ceremony is much like a register office wedding but the couple can choose an approved location where the ceremony will take place. Approved locations could be stately homes, a favourite park, hotel or restaurant to the more unusual of a football club or zoo.

The local registrar will charge a call out fee and this will vary by local authorities, couples choosing a civil wedding do not have to stick to their own district but must also inform their local registrar about the ceremony.

Points to remember when choosing a register office wedding

* Both of the people who are marrying must give notice of the marriage.

* Each of you must give notice in the district where you live.

* You must marry within 12 months of giving notice.

* Provisional bookings should be made well in advance, provisional bookings can be made more than 12 months in advance .
