Wedding planning

The exchanging of wedding rings is a time honoured tradition which dates back to ancient Egypt, where exchanging gold bands symbolised ever lasting love for all eternity. Wedding rings today are still favoured as gold bands with other styles and metals now being introduced. When choosing wedding rings remember that you will be wearing the ring for the rest of your life so it should be something you love and which suits your finger.

Always visit a reputable jeweller who will be able to show you wedding ring's in all metals from plain gold, to decorated gold, jewelled wedding bands and rings in titanium and platinum. Superstition says that wedding rings shouldn't be worn before the day for fear of bringing bad luck but remember that the rings are going to be expensive so please do forget superstition and try them on and have them resized if necessary.

Gifts for the bridal party

If the bride and groom are following tradition then the will want to exchange gifts with each other and give their parents and attendants such as bridesmaids and page boy gifts too.

Gifts such as theatre tickets, a romantic dinner at a nice restaurant or a day out make perfect gifts for the bride and grooms parents while your jewellers can help you choose items suitable for engraving as special reminders of the big day for your bridesmaids and page boy.

Engraved trinket boxes, lipstick holders or an item of jewellery are perfect for your bridesmaids and engraved tankards or cufflinks are suitable gifts for the best man and ushers. If you have younger bridesmaids or ushers then perhaps a teddy bear or tickets to a favourite theme park would be more suitable.

Gifts for the wedding guests

Many people want to give their wedding guests a little something and these are usually left on the tables for your guests at the reception hall, items you could use are miniature bottles of spirits, chocolates and sweets, key rings, crackers or party poppers. Another good idea is placing a single use camera on tables which the guests can use, have someone collect them afterward and process them while you're on honeymoon.

Your bridal gift list

It is traditional for guests to bring the bride and groom a gift on their wedding day. These days many couples set up a gift list with their favourite gift shop or department store, couples go to the store and pick out items varying in price and leave it with the registry for family and friends to choose from.

When items are purchased by your guests, the store simply deletes it from the gift list and makes a note of who purchased it ready for your thank you notes. This is an excellent way to ensure you get gifts which you need and also don't double up on items.
