Wedding planning

Speeches are a big part of the wedding day and they are traditionally given by the groom, best man and the father of the bride and now it's becoming increasingly popular for the bride herself to give a speech. Here are some tips on who speaks, when to help you with those speeches and sample ideas you could include in your speech:

The bride's father speech

Traditionally the bride's father will be the first to speak and should be introduced by the best man to the wedding guests. The bride's father's speech will usually be to toast the happy couple and wish them success for a happy and long marriage.

Before making his speech he will normally welcome the grooms parents and friends and family of both sides. He will welcome his new son in law into the family and talk a little about his daughter before turning the floor over to the groom.

The groom's speech

The groom will be expected to reply to this on behalf of himself and his new bride and thank the parents of the bride and his own parents for all the help and support they have given. He should also take the opportunity to thank all the guests for attending the wedding and for their gifts. The bridegroom should then propose a toast to the bridesmaids, pageboy and ushers and present them with gifts.

The best man's speech

The best man should then respond and his speech should be light hearted and fun and he should also read out any wedding cards that the couple have received and thank everyone for attending.

Ideas for the best mans speech

* If the groom is also your brother then you could include this in a joking way in your speech by saying something like " thank you for choosing me as your best man its an honour and a pleasure that after all these years you have finally admitted I am the best man"

* One liners are always a great success and bring a chuckle you could include something like "my speech does not contain any original material so if you are offended by anything I say it has nothing to do with me"

* If you want to get slightly risqué the you could include something like "being asked to be best man is rather like being asked to make love to the Queen, while it's a great honour nobody really wants to do it"

* A great way to bring a laugh to break the ice when starting your speech would be to say "Fornication. sorry. I meant for an occasion. such as this" and then go into your speech.

* You could say to the groom " For a long and successful marriage always remember to say these three little words to your wife.you're right dear"

* Open your speech by saying "I'm sure you'll all agree that this has turned out to be an exceptional wedding day but every silver lining has a cloud.and you now have to listen to me"
